Social Media icons are a necessity on our websites to grow and direct the communities we are building and give them ways of interacting with us.
But it seems it is not as simple as sticking them on there and off you go. Interestingly I am frequently seeing the same issues…
Choose Social Media icons that fit with the image of your website. There are thousands of free icon sets out there created by designers who just wanted to produce something cool and share them for the love of it. Take your pick!
Now please place them where we can see them! Don’t hide them away using tiny icons at the bottom of the page or just on your contact page. Many potential and existing customers WANT the opportunity to join your community and interact. It makes us feel closer to you and more involved. This means we may be visiting your website specifically looking for a link to your Social Media networks. Don’t make us play hide and seek.
It is critical that these icons actually take your new Superfan to the relevant Social Media account. In a recent project of researching Twitter names for a client, nearly 25% of the links we clicked on websites did not take us directly to their account, just to the home page such as www.twitter.com.
So we are on your website and clicking on those links. What happens next? Is your Facebook Business Page opening up in a new browser window or is it navigating away from your website in the same browser window?
Always have links leaving your website opening up in a new browser window, this leaves your website open to tempt them to go back and read more.
Now grab yourself a coffee and go have some fun picking your favourite icons for your website!
