Okay, so you know you need to be using social media and you’ve got your Facebook and Twitter profiles set up. You’ve even posted a couple of links to interesting articles. Job done?
Twitter and Facebook offer us all the chance to promote our businesses online for free and they are both stuffed full of tools we can use to do this. Yet every day I come across Facebook pages that make me want to run away screaming! The trouble is, if you don’t know what you’re doing you could actually end up setting up a page that looks so awful that it harms your business … which kind of defeats the whole object of using social media in the first place, doesn’t it?!
There are a few huge mistakes that I keep seeing business owners make in social media – and sadly they’re all mistakes that, with a bit of training, they could avoid. I’m talking about things like:
> Posting links with no explanation of what they are – this can make you look like a spammer, or as if someone’s hacked your account.
> Adding a cover photo that says nothing about your business or is just completely out of sync with the impression you are trying to make.
> WRITING ALL YOUR UPDATES IN CAPITALS! Not only is it very difficult to read something all in caps, but it’s also considered to be rude!
Those are just a few of the mistakes I come across again and again…are you guilty of any of them? Mostly it happens because people don’t understand the tools properly. No one is expected to be an expert in everything they do, but if you are struggling to make the right impression on social media, why not take advantage of any quiet time this month to sort out some social media training?
