When we talk to people about Social Media we tend to find they split into three groups:
- Those who LOVE it and can’t get enough of it!
- Those who know they need to do it but could really take it or leave it.
- Those who are TERRIFIED of it!
Which group do you fit into? Do you love tweeting, pinning and Google Plus-ing? Or do you panic that you’ll be giving away your soul if you open up a Facebook account?
With Hallowe’en on the way it’s a good time to look at the spooky side of Social Media – those things that f-f-f-frighten people and put them off using Social Media to promote themselves and their businesses.
Six Frightful Fears of Using Social Media
1. The Fear of Looking Stupid
We’ve probably all felt this, especially when we start using a new Social Media platform. Each tool has its own rules and etiquette, and fear of getting it wrong can stop people from using it altogether. We’ve all heard about public figures who’ve sent what they thought was a Direct Message (DM) to all their followers… Whether we panic about making spelling mistakes, over sharing or not getting the latest trending joke, The Fear of Looking Stupid can be overcome. All you have to do is practice – and double check everything you post before you press send!
2. The Fear of Being a Failure
Using Social Media – especially Facebook – can mean you’re suddenly confronted with people from your past who brag about how successful they’ve been. Have you avoided Social Media for fear you’ll appear inadequate in comparison? If so, stop right now. You don’t have to be a superhero – being authentic and real is what it’s all about.
We’ll admit it – Social Media is probably THE easiest way to waste time. You log onto Facebook to update your business page and three hours later you’re still there, looking at photos of family or catching up on news from friends abroad. Have a strategy, use tools to help you schedule your updates and manage your time more effectively and avoid distractions!
4. The Fear of Knowing Too Much
Every minute of the day over 600,000 bits of information are shared on Facebook – and then there are the 100,000 tweets, 48 hours of YouTube video and 3,600 Instagram photos uploaded every minute. WOW, information overload or what!! But you don’t need to read EVERYTHING that’s posted on Social Media. Use tools like HootSuite and create lists in Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn so you can filter out the dross and just read the stuff that is relevant.
5. The Fear of Being Stalked
OK this one is serious. Many people don’t use Social Media because they are worried about putting their information out there, and that can be a very real concern. But it’s also a simple one to overcome – and YOU are completely in control. It’s simple really – don’t say anything on Twitter/Facebook/LinkedIn or anywhere else on the internet that you are not 100% comfortable sharing in public. And check your privacy settings – on Facebook you can change them for every post so the only people reading your updates are the ones you want to read them.
6. The Fear of Missing Out
According to research by mylife.com 56% of us suffer from FOMO – The Fear of Missing Out. I have friends who suffer drastically from it. Smartphones and tablets mean we’re never far away from our Social Media networks, whether we’re on the bus, in bed, on holiday or on the loo – and we’re checking our accounts more and more regularly to make sure we don’t miss that bit of news, stunning photo or funny cat video. Does that sound like you? Maybe it’s time to take a Social Media break … just an hour when you turn your phone off and focus on real life can make a big difference!
