Are You Planning to Fail With Your Social Media This Year?

2014 PlanHands up if one of your New Year’s resolutions was to do more with Social Media for your business? Good for you – but how much thought have you actually given it? Have you planned how you’re going to use Social Media, which platforms you want to focus on, what you want to achieve? Because if you fail to plan, you’re planning to fail, it’s as simple as that.

To celebrate Mushroom Souffle’s 5th birthday we are hosting free webinars throughout 2014 and the first two are this month – Wednesday 8th January and Thursday 23rd January – they are all about planning for success. We’ll be giving you 9 crucial steps you need to follow, top tips on the questions you need to ask, the evil traps to avoid and the tools you can use to create Social Media Magic. To get you warmed up and motivated, here are three areas you need to start thinking about to help you use Social Media successfully this year.

Aim

What are you aiming to achieve with Social Media? Have you ever started using a platform just “to see what happens” – and given up when nothing much did happen? What were you expecting to achieve? If you don’t set out with an aim in mind, how will you ever know if it’s working? It could be you want to gain new customers, get people to visit your blog, create a network – but if you haven’t defined what your aim is, you’ll never know if you’ve achieved it.

Audience

There are HUNDREDS of Social Media platforms and it’s impossible to be on all of them – so you need to focus on the right ones for you and your business. But who do you want to connect with? And where do they hang out? If the answer to the first question is “anyone”, think again. By defining your ideal customer – women over 30, small business owners, HR managers etc – you’ll be able to focus your efforts in the places you’re most likely to meet those people.

Analytics

Finally, you need to find some way of analysing your Social Media to make sure it’s working. Tools like Google Analytics are great because they show you exactly how people find your website. It can be less easy to track the effectiveness of Social Media though. Try setting goals for each platform and then measuring your progress. You’ll soon be able to spot which ones are worth sticking with, and which should be dumped.
