Social Media Triumphs in 2013 to Learn From

2013 was a great year for Social Media. Understanding, creativity and skill at it increased at warp speed, boosting entertainment and marketing value, especially when viewed and shared by vast numbers of people. There have been huge successes and some even bigger failures. I want to share some examples of the triumphs that we can all learn from and use in weaving our Social Media Magic.

Managing Trolls

James BluntJames Blunt gets the thumbs up from us for his quick and funny responses on Twitter to abusive tweets.

Why should anyone be on the receiving end of nasty, vicious attacks online? Being famous – whether a celebrity or a brand – can make you an easy target but that doesn’t mean you have to roll over and play dead! There is never an excuse for being a troll.

Starbucks has had HUGE success with its use of #hashtags.

Search #strawsome on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. You will find tons of photos of creative straw art on by Starbucks and their fans over the summer.

Check out #sipface too which is selfies of customers with their Starbucks drinks.

What hashtags are you using for your business to share and engage with your community?

Use of Video

Video has taken over! And for the feel good factor – Three’s Dancing Pony was a hit! Do you remember it? A Shetland Pony called Socks moon walking through the countryside to Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Everywhere’. #DancePonyDance > watch it here.

It captured the attention of people everywhere and made us smile. To-date their YouTube video has had over 8milion views since Thursday 28th February 2013 when it was released! It was viewed over 1 million times in the first weekend, the video spread like wildfire through Twitter and Facebook.

Three’s comment on their video was:

“Our ad is frivolous, funny and, some might say, daft. But that’s sort of the point. With it, we want to celebrate the kind of stuff that people like to share with their friends. The stuff that on the face of it might seem meaningless, but when you dig a little deeper, you find its really about people building and cementing relationships and friendships, letting each other know they’re thinking of them. So, not meaningless at all.  I guess it’s the modern day equivalent of a mix tape. It’s not so much the subject of what’s shared, but the act of sharing itself that’s important.”

That is what Social Media is all about, interacting with people, helping them, building the relationships and being remembered and talked about. You can use it to achieve whatever goals and dreams you have.

The MOST SHARED video last year and of ALL TIME was ‘Dove Real Beauty Sketches‘ with over 114million total views in the first month in April 2013!

To reinforce the point that women can be very critical of their looks and don’t see their own beauty, an FBI-trained sketch artist drew women first based on their own self-perception and then based on that of a stranger. The stranger’s descriptions were generally more attractive and similar to what the subjects actually looked like.

This created an emotional response hence the monumental reaction to it.

Ace Customer Service

Gold StarSurely the gold star for customer service has to go to American Airlines after holding a flight for tweeting customer, Alan Silberberg, and his children in July 2013.

Stuck on the tarmac in a plane in Philadelphia and worried about missing their flight in Chicago, Alan tweeted @Americanair asking them if he should rebook his connecting flight. American Airlines responded straight away, got his flight info and proceeded to have the Chicago airport hold his connecting flight for him until he arrived. Awesome customer service and great use of Twitter in real time. Read Alan’s blog on the Huffington Post.

How can you help you customers on Social Media to even greater effect this year? Give them an incredible experience worth remembering and sharing with everyone.
